Map the Gaps in Seafloor Data

Support Open-Access Data

Build a Global Community

We can’t protect what we don’t understand and we can’t understand what we don’t measure.

Only around 5% of the sea floor has been mapped in detail. This gap in knowledge about what lies at the bottom of our world’s oceans often leaves conservation organizations, communities, explorers, and researchers in the dark and unable to access the data they need to support crucial projects and initiatives. To make things even more challenging, sea floor data is not always available or relevant, and the cost of acquiring new data can be prohibitive.

Empowering global conservation, exploration, research efforts and communities

Seafloor data is crucial for empowering global conservation, exploration, research and community initiatives, but collecting and accessing the necessary data to support these projects is no easy task. This is why we’re creating a global community of citizen scientists, explorers, and academics, like you, who are passionate and dedicated to helping map the gaps.

Help us Map the Gaps

Mapping the Gaps in our seafloor data requires a collective global effort. With your help, we can make collecting and accessing seafloor data easy, inclusive and accessible to the projects that need it the most.

Donate

Financial support is crucial for the success of our mission. By donating, you help fund various seafloor mapping expeditions and research initiatives, furthering our knowledge of the ocean floor. No matter the size, every donation brings us one step closer to mapping the gaps.

Become an Ocean Citizen Explorer

Turn every ocean journey on your boat into an ocean exploration expedition. We can help you get a data logger through Map the Gaps and install it on your own vessel. As you sail, your data logger will be silently recording and uploading invaluable data about the sea floor to our open-access database.

Corporate Sponsorship

Equip your fleet with ocean floor pinging data loggers, turning every voyage into a seafloor expedition.  Collaborate directly with our teams on research projects or sponsor entire mapping missions, associating your brand with significant scientific contributions and ocean conservation efforts.

Join our Team of Explorers

Do you share our commitment to ocean exploration and accessible seafloor data? Whether you're a professional, student, researcher, explorer or emerging technologist, we’d love to have you join our team of explorers and directly support our mapping missions.
