The Five Deeps Expedition

Alumni from seven countries from six different years of the training program were funded for transit and dive legs of the Five Deeps expedition as Ocean Mappers.  The goal being to utilize onboard equipment, particularly during transit legs, to ensure that bathymetric data was collected during transits that would contribute to the Nippon Foundation – GEBCO Seabed 2030 project.  This was a result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that was signed between The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project and the Five Deeps Expedition in Monaco on 11 March 2019.  Alumni involvement in this expedition was made possible by the financial support of CCOM/JHC and gift funds from John Hall.

Seabed 2030, through Ocean Frontier Mapping, supported two additional alumni for part of the Caladan Oceanic’s Ring of Fire Part II mission. Alumni assisted in locating positions for the Limiting Factor dives in the Mariana and Philippine Trench and provided detailed bathymetric maps to help with the successful search for the wreck of the USS Johnston in the Philippine Sea.
